From artistic concept to logistical execution, Mayworks supports the work of labour and community organizations in a variety of capacities. We will help you reach your event goals, whether to raise public support or to mobilize members, by elevating the experience with artistic and cultural work.
Our cultural program occupies time and space outside the main program. By having the additional layer of programming your delegates will have a more multi-faceted experience. One in which the members will have a break from the main program but at the same time are feeling engaged. Members will be re-energized or even inspired by the art that they take in.
Cultural programming runs in concert with your main agenda. Mayworks can:
- curate and install a visual gallery in the exhibit halls
- schedule performances during lunch service or breaks
- host evening events such as, a documentary movie night, cabaret and gala dance
- walking tours with a social justice theme during unscheduled periods.
Mayworks has two new programs: “Beyond Our Ranks” and “Workers as Artists”. They can be implemented in its entirety or by components. Please contact us for more information about these programs.
Cultural Presentations for Conventions and Special Events
Successful programming needs to be on point with its sequencing of content, pacing and variety. Mayworks can help you find and book musical, spoken word, comedic and other cultural performances to keep delegates and participants energized and engaged.
Member Engagement and Education
Member engagement and education are the building blocks to union readiness. We want our members to be on the same page; meanwhile, individuals take in information in different ways. Mayworks has worked closely with labour and adult educators who can integrate visual arts, theater and other cultural works into a curriculum, workshop or training.
When it’s time to take to the streets, Mayworks can provide music, visual arts and theatrical performances that will focus and amplify your public space presence. These onsite activities will support and amplify your message captured by traditional and social media.
The cultural work you need for a strike action or exhibition will be commissioned. Mayworks is active in the arts community and will find the right artist.
“We were pleased and delighted with the coordination provided by Mayworks Festival at our July 4th rally and concert staged in a clover field across from a proposed dumpsite in Simcoe County, ON. Our partnership with CUPE Ontario and Mayworks Festival was pivotal in building awareness to victory in halting the site and saving Canada’s most pristine groundwater deposits! The participation of Mayworks was extremely helpful.” - Maude Barlow, Council of Canadians
“CUPE has asked Mayworks to coordinate the cultural program at our last two national conventions, as well as at our national women’s bargaining conference. It’s been a great experience in every way. Mayworks brings solid expertise, experience and professionalism to this important component of our collective experience as workers. And CUPE staff and members have totally appreciated the wonderful music, poetry and art that has come to us from working with Mayworks.”
- Cathy Remus, CUPE Education Officer
“[The CAW was] really excited to have Mayworks coordinate and support our CAW Youth Conference. Our coordinator put together a ‘Poetry Slam’ event which included a number of young artists. We felt confident that Mayworks would create a program that was socially relevant, entertaining and engaging – judging by the tremendous feedback that we received from our membership – Mayworks delivered!”
- Robin Fairchild, CAW National Representative
