সাবধান / SHABDHAN (“CAREFUL”)

সাবধান / SHABDHAN (“CAREFUL”)
by L. Akhter in collaboration with namrata, a part of In Transit

সাবধান / SHABDHAN (“careful”) sits at the easternmost Scarborough subway station; central to the homes, workplaces, and lives of South Asian migrant and marginalized people. More specifically, the installation and poem explore the literal and lateral surveillance faced by Bengali communities. সাবধান is an interrogation of and a plea to community, of caring and being careful. It asks those who engage with the work—Is this what you meant?—to reflect upon the ways that performative respectability become violent microcosms of living in surveillance states: we are surveilled, and we surveil each other.
